Two thousand years of stone whisper secrets here. Welcome to the Lapidary of the National Museum. This isn’t just a museum it’s a graveyard of giants. A silent testament to Prague’s tumultuous past.

Imagine the artisans. Their chisels carving saints and emperors into cold hard stone. Their sweat mingling with the dust. The weight of history settling on their shoulders. This collection holds their legacy.

The Lapidary of the National Museum opened in 1905. It houses a treasure trove of stone sculptures. Artifacts from Bohemia’s rich history. They span from the 11th to the 19th centuries. The collection boasts around 2000 pieces. Only 400 are on display though.

Look closely. The oldest Romanesque fragments here date back to the late 11th century. They’re from the crypt of St Vitus Basilica. They’ve endured wars plagues and renovations. They’ve seen centuries pass.

See those Gothic statues? Six of them were originally on the Charles Bridge Tower. They depict Emperor Charles IV his son King Wenceslas IV and various patron saints. A lion stands guard.

Marvel at the Krocin fountain. This rose marble masterpiece once graced Old Town Square. It’s a relic of the Renaissance. Note the tombstones. They come from destroyed Prague cemeteries. Each one holds a unique story. A family’s history etched in stone.

The hall dedicated to the Virgin Mary’s Pest Column is haunting. It showcases fragments of a column destroyed by anarchists in 1918. Imagine the outcry. The loss. The vandalism.

Notice the baroque statues from the Charles Bridge. They are magnificent. One group depicts the Ecstasy of Saint Ludgardis. Another shows Saint Francis Xaverius baptizing Indians. A third is The Apotheosis of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. This one was lost to the river in 1890. It was never recovered.

The Bohemian high baroque section is equally stunning. Look at the first statue of Saint Wenceslas. Johann Georg Bendl carved it in 1680. It was meant for the Horse Market (now Wenceslas Square). The hall also holds six saints from St Gallus Church. There are two statues from Loretto Church in Prague-Hradčany too.

Even the Habsburg emperors are represented here. Equestrian and standing figures of Franz Joseph I and Francis I are on display. So is the monument to Field Marshal Joseph V Radetzky von Radetz. These monuments were removed after World War I. Republican authorities removed reminders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

This place is more than just stone. It’s a living history lesson. It speaks to the resilience of Prague and its people. It demonstrates the power of art and its endurance. Take your time. Explore. Let the past envelop you. Leave touched by the legacy of these master artisans and their magnificent creations.
