Isn’t it amazing that a place like Långsjöbadet can emerge from such humble beginnings? Before Långsjöbadet became the popular beach we see today it was quite different. Imagine swampland with drainage ditches. Picture tall alders and impenetrable reeds.

Långsjöbadet officially opened in 1938. This marked a significant transformation of the area. Today Långsjöbadet boasts a sandy beach approximately 50 meters long. It also offers several bathing jetties. However the water quality can vary due to algae blooms in the lake.

The story of Långsjöbadet is also linked to the development of the surrounding Långsjö district. In 1908 the land of Långsjö farm came into the possession of AB Billiga Tomters. The first city plan for Långsjö was established in 1938. This plan largely followed the existing streets and blocks planned in the early 1900s.

Initially the railway from Älvsjö station was the only transportation link to Stockholm. In 1922 Olof Strand and K. I Jansson obtained traffic permits for bus routes. These routes ran from Midsommarkransen to Långsjö. By 1924 the route extended to Hornsgatan. In 1930 AB Stockholms Spårvägar took over this line turning it into bus route 64. It ran between Hornstull Långsjö and Skanstull.

Today Långsjöbadet provides a place to cool off. Långsjö offers more than just a beach. The Långsjö area itself has a rich history. The district got its name from Långsjö farm which is located by Lake Långsjön. The lake borders Huddinge municipality. Robert Ditzinger a businessman had the two identical main buildings of Långsjö farm built for his two sons in 1882.

The nature around Långsjöhöjden borders Lake Långsjön. At 73 meters above sea level it is the second highest natural point in Stockholm municipality. Only Vikingaberget is higher at 77 meters above sea level. From the top of Långsjöhöjden there is a wide view over Huddinge municipality. You can also see the southwestern parts of Stockholm.

So as you enjoy the water and the sun remember the journey of Långsjöbadet. From a swampy area to a cherished spot for recreation and relaxation.
