Opened in 1965 Langley High School stands proudly in McLean Virginia. This wasn’t always its name though. Initially called Potomac View High School Langley’s moniker changed reflecting its location near Langley Manor. Thomas Lee’s British estate played a significant role in early American history. Lee envisioned the thirteen colonies as a nation with its capital near the Potomac. The school’s Saxon nickname and green and gold colors are a nod to this rich history. Langley’s construction finished in 1965. It was a time of rapid growth in Fairfax County. Langley was the first public school in the county with central air conditioning. A remarkable achievement for its time. Langley’s boundaries extend far westward. They reach the Loudoun County line. Parts of Vienna Reston and Herndon are also within its attendance area. This wasn’t always the case. Before 1994 areas west of Springvale Road belonged to Herndon High. The shift in boundaries occurred due to Langley’s under-enrollment and requests from Great Falls residents. Jane Strauss a former School Board Chair played a significant part in preventing boundary changes for eighteen years. Langley routinely participates in VHSL It’s Academic and invitational events. The school boasts an impressive record three consecutive VHSL State Championships from 2014 to 2016. Nitin Rao a Langley alumnus tied for second highest scorer at the 2016 championship. He was also selected for the All-State Team. Langley’s success extends to other areas. Their nationally-competitive Model UN team demonstrates intellectual prowess. The South Asian Student Association (SASA) promotes inclusivity and community engagement. They host an annual International Night and a District-Wide charity event. Langley’s athletic programs are equally impressive. The football team reached the state finals in 1993. The boys’ wrestling team held the Liberty District Tournament title for eleven consecutive years from 2001 to 2011. The boys’ lacrosse team won the state championship in 2009 2010 and 2011. The boys’ swim and dive team achieved its first state victory in 2017-2018. The girls’ tennis team swept district regional and state titles in 2012. Langley High School has a rich legacy. Its academic achievements athletic triumphs and vibrant extracurricular activities contribute to its continued success.
