It was originally a humble Bockwindmühle. This type of windmill was common in the region. The mill served the eight villages along the Rhine. It was their lifeline for ground grain. In the 18th century the Langeler Mühle underwent a transformation. A new Holländerwindmill replaced the old Bockwindmühle. This new mill was built of sturdy brick. It had a rotating cap that allowed it to catch the wind more efficiently. Disaster struck in 1884. A fire ignited by a lightning strike ravaged the Langeler Mühle. The mill was rebuilt but this time with a steam engine. This modernization marked the end of an era. The steam engine was eventually deemed unprofitable. Today the Langeler Mühle stands as a testament to Cologne’s rich history. Its sturdy tower has been converted into a residential space. At the top you can still see the glazed observation deck. It offers panoramic views of the cityscape. This is a reminder of the mill’s past.
