Consider this: a solemn space dedicated to Lane Cove’s fallen heroes. This is the Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele. It stands as a permanent memorial to those who died in service to their country.

The Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele was the idea of Alderman Venteman. He was the Mayor of the time. He suggested it in August 1953.

Local ex-service associations were consulted. The current site was agreed upon. The Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele was officially opened in December 1953. The Governor of New South Wales, Sir John Northcott, unveiled it.

The Lane Cove Cenotaph is a rectangular altar. It is made of dark grey granite. This replicated the temporary cenotaph. It was made of painted wood. It was used during important events at the time.

On the front of the Lane Cove Cenotaph is a gold wreath. The words ‘Lest we forget’ are inscribed across the middle.

The Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele serves as a place for reflection. Residents can pay their respects. The memorial stands outside Lane Cove Library. It is at the corner of Longueville Road and Austin Street.

The nearby Lane Cove Civic Centre holds another war memorial. It is an elegant timber honour roll for the First World War. It lists servicemen from the district.

Originally, the roll was mounted in a glass case outside the Civic Centre. The case started to break down. Dust and water damaged the board. The lettering faded. The roll was moved inside the foyer. Now conservation efforts protect it.

The Lane Cove Memorial School of Arts also commemorates World War One. It was erected to honor those who died in service. The building is now the Living and Learning Centre.

The Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele, the Honour Roll, and the School of Arts. All are tributes to the commitment and sacrifice of Lane Cove residents. They answered the call to serve their country.

The Lane Cove War Memorial Cenotaph Stele is more than stone. It represents a community’s gratitude. It is a place to remember those who gave their all. It ensures their sacrifices are never forgotten.
