Landslide Lookout is in the heart of Katoomba. It’s a natural attraction drawing visitors with stunning vistas. From here, steep cliffs and lush valleys converge. The lookout is easily accessible. It’s a convenient stop while exploring the region.
This place got its name from a dramatic event in the early 1930s. A landslide reshaped the landscape opening up views over the Jamison Valley. The Katoomba Landslides of 1931 changed this area forever. Cracks behind the cliffs were first reported in 1929. A miner noticed them returning from work. It became apparent that a major rock fall was imminent. Crowds came to watch hoping to witness the event.
The main fall happened around 4 am on January 29th. There were no witnesses and no photographs. Another fall occurred on May 2nd at around 2 pm. The Sydney Mail reported on it with photographs. People’s interests moved on. This all happened during the Great Depression.
Today, the site is becoming overgrown. Oxidation takes effect and plants make it their home. The site is usually referred to as at “the Dog Face Rock”. Presumably this landmark was lost when the cliff collapsed. The jumble of debris at the base is also becoming overgrown.
Landslide Lookout is perched at the highest point of the break in the sandstone cliff. But you can’t see the landslide itself from here. To see the landslide head off through the scrub. You can get a good view from Narrow Neck Lookout.
While visiting Landslide Lookout, take your time. Soak in the scenery and explore the surrounding area. Walking trails nearby offer additional viewpoints. There are also opportunities to connect with nature.

Driving here is straightforward. Head towards Katoomba. From Katoomba, take the Great Western Highway (A32). Follow the signs towards Katoomba Falls Road. Parking is limited so arrive early.
Public transport is also an option. Take a train from Sydney to Katoomba Station. Then, catch a local bus to Echo Point. Get off near the Katoomba Falls Reserve. From there, it’s a 15-minute walk to Landslide Lookout.
You can walk from Katoomba’s main street. Head towards the Katoomba Falls Reserve. Well-marked walking paths lead to the lookout. The walk takes about 30 minutes. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
