This decision was partially reversed in 1947. The Saarburg district joined Rhineland-Palatinate. The Trier district already belonged there.

The Landkreis Trier-Saarburg was created in 1969. It combined parts of the Trier and Saarburg districts. Communities were integrated into the city of Trier. Others switched to neighboring districts. This reshaping solidified the region. It created the modern administrative boundaries we see today.
