It’s a guardian of Thuringia’s past. The Landesarchiv Thüringen – Hauptstaatsarchiv Weimar traces its origins back to the 15th century. Weimar Castle served as a repository for the Wettin dynasty’s documents. This marked the beginning of the archive’s journey. A pivotal moment arrived in 1547. Weimar became the main residence of the Duchy of Saxony. This led to a new era for the archive. Previous archives were transferred to Weimar. The archival records of the Ernestine governments and their predecessors were consolidated. This created the Joint Main Archive of the Saxe-Ernestine House. In the late 16th century, a separate Secret Archive emerged. It housed the administrative records of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar. This Duchy later merged with Saxony-Eisenach in 1741. It was elevated to a Grand Duchy in 1815. This Secret Archive became the Secret Main and State Archive. It managed the current registries and authority archives. The Grand Duke also entrusted it with the Grand Ducal House Archive in 1865. This had evolved from the princely estates. It remains a separate department within the Landesarchiv Thüringen – Hauptstaatsarchiv Weimar. In 1920, the state of Thuringia was founded. The existing archives in Weimar were merged to form the Thuringian State Archive in 1923. From 1926, it oversaw all state archives in Thuringia. It was renamed the Thuringian Main State Archive in 1951 and the State Archive in 1965. After Thuringia’s re-establishment in 1991, it became the Thuringian Main State Archive Weimar. In 2016, six independent state archives were organizationally merged. This formed the Landesarchiv Thüringen. The Hauptstaatsarchiv Weimar became a department within it. Today, the Landesarchiv Thüringen – Hauptstaatsarchiv Weimar holds an impressive collection. It includes 22 kilometers of files, 16,000 documents, and 58,000 maps.
