Gazing across the landscape dotted with shimmering lakes, one might wonder how Land O’ Lakes earned its name. Was it a tribute to the dairy company or simply a reflection of its watery surroundings? Land O’ Lakes, a census-designated place in Pasco County, Florida, has a rich history intertwined with both. The name, officially adopted in 1950, arose from a community meeting, solidifying the area’s identity and distinguishing it from the smaller settlements it encompassed, such as Denham, Ehren, and Gowers Corner. Before its modern moniker, this area hosted stagecoach lines and sawmills. The Concord Stage Line, established in the late 1840s, traversed this region, marking a relay stop known as “26-Mile House” near present-day Land O’ Lakes. Later, the Tampa Southern Railroad followed the old stagecoach route, further connecting the growing communities. One such community, Ehren, named for a German town and meaning “place of honor,” boasted a sawmill, a hotel, a school, and even a post office, operational from 1890 to 1950. Remnants of this era can still be found in the Ehren and Mt. Carmel cemeteries. A particularly noteworthy landmark is one of Florida’s largest bald cypress trees, located in the Cypress Creek Preserve. Land O’ Lakes wasn’t just a hub for industry. It also held one of Florida’s earliest tourist attractions, Dupree Gardens. Opened in 1940, this 25-acre botanical wonderland drew up to 30,000 visitors annually, offering flowering plants, a lodge, a tearoom, and glass-bottomed boat rides on Dupree Lake. Sadly, gas rationing during WWII led to its closure in 1943. While it briefly reopened after the war, a fire in 1995 destroyed the tearoom, leaving only ruins and scattered plantings as reminders of its former glory. Today, new housing developments stand where this popular destination once thrived. Today, Land O’ Lakes is a rapidly growing community, part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Its population has exploded since the 1990s, transforming the once-rural landscape into a bustling suburb. The area continues to evolve, blending its historical roots with modern development, offering a unique blend of old and new to its residents and visitors.
