Picture this a charming brick building nestled beside the Humber River. This is Lambton House a true gem of Toronto’s history. Established in 1847 it stands as the last remaining structure from the bustling village of Lambton Mills.

Lambton House wasn’t just any building. It was a thriving inn. Imagine the stagecoaches arriving. Travelers weary from their journeys sought refuge here. They found food rest and good company. The hotel opened in 1848. It was a popular spot. This was before the railroad. Dundas Highway was a major route. People came for picnics too. The turn of the century saw its popularity soar.

Lambton House faced challenges. It survived a devastating fire in 1915. Hurricane Hazel in 1954 was another test. Yet this resilient building stood strong. It was designated a historical site in 1982. However it faced demolition in 1988. The last owners sold it to developers. At that time it was Ontario’s longest-running licensed tavern.

But the story doesn’t end there. Lambton House was saved. Restored in 1991 with further work in 1994 1998 and 2002 it’s now a designated building under the Ontario Heritage Act. It’s also a National Historic Site. The city of Toronto owns it. Heritage York a non-profit group operates it. It serves as an interpretive center. It tells the story of the Lower Humber River and its surroundings.
