Established in 1902, Lambton Golf and Country Club whispers tales of Toronto’s elite. It all began with Albert William Austin, son of businessman James Austin. James Austin, after rebuilding the iconic Spadina House, left a considerable fortune to his son. Albert, a golf enthusiast, initially created a small course on the future site of Casa Loma. This evolved into the Spadina Golf Club, stretching from St. Clair Avenue through Forest Hill Village. However, with the threat of development looming, Austin sought a permanent home for his passion. And so, Lambton Golf and Country Club was born. Lambton Golf and Country Club officially opened on a rainy June day in 1903. Nearly 400 members, many arriving by train, witnessed the birth of this golfing haven. The club boasted innovative features, including a nine-hole course specifically for women and even a telephone, a rarity at the time. An icehouse, stocked with 100 tons of ice, stood ready to cool refreshments. Lambton Golf and Country Club also holds a rich history of hosting prestigious tournaments. Four Canadian Opens and four Canadian Amateur Championships have graced its greens. Champions like Percy Barrett, Daniel Kenny, Leo Diegel, and the legendary Sam Snead etched their names into Lambton’s history. The club’s first captain, George Lyon, an eight-time Canadian Amateur Champion, even secured an Olympic gold medal in golf at the 1904 St. Louis games. The club’s legacy extends beyond tournaments. Golfing giants like Harry Vardon and Ted Ray showcased their skills at Lambton in 1913. Even royalty graced the course, with the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, playing a round in 1919. Lambton Golf and Country Club stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of golf, a place where history and sport intertwine amidst the rolling terrain of Toronto.
