Beneath the rustling leaves of the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees, countless dreams have taken flight. These aren’t just any trees. They are living embodiments of hope and tradition, nestled in the heart of Fong Ma Po Village in Lam Tsuen. For over two centuries, people have flocked to the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees, seeking blessings and a touch of magic. Originally, wishes were written on joss paper tied to oranges. These were then flung towards the branches, a hopeful prayer hanging in the balance. A wish caught in the branches meant good fortune. A wish that fell to the ground? Well, perhaps it was a bit too ambitious. The Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees witnessed a surge in popularity, especially during the Lunar New Year. However, this popularity came at a cost. The weight of countless wishes, in the form of oranges and joss paper, proved too much. In 2005, a branch, laden with hopes and dreams, snapped, injuring two visitors. This incident led to a ban on throwing wishes onto the trees. To preserve the tradition, wooden racks were erected nearby. These now hold the colorful placards bearing the wishes of countless visitors. And for those seeking a more interactive experience, a 25-foot replica of the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees was built. This replica allows visitors to continue the tradition of throwing their wishes, although now with plastic oranges, recalling the age-old custom. The Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees continue to stand as a testament to the enduring power of hope. They serve as a reminder that even in a rapidly changing world, some traditions remain, offering solace and a connection to the past.
