Lake Onoke’s outlet to the ocean presents a unique challenge. It’s famously dangerous for fishing. Several drownings have occurred there. The ocean often closes the outlet. This causes the lake to rise. Controlling the lake’s level has always been crucial. Locals have historically dug channels through the beach to relieve pressure. More recently in 2023 the South Wairarapa District Council took over management of Lake Ferry Holiday Park. The council purchased the campground. They had previously declined to renew a lease due to compliance issues. They invested $209000 for upgrades. Kiwicamp is now the operator. Lake Ferry Holiday Park is being upgraded. It’s being made even better for visitors.
