Have you ever felt the pull of a place? Lake Ferry Holiday Park calls to you. It whispers tales of a bygone era a time when a ferry chugged across Lake Onoke’s mouth. Lake Ferry isn’t just a holiday park. It’s a living piece of history nestled on the shores of Lake Onoke. The very name itself evokes a sense of adventure a journey across water to a tranquil haven.

The story of Lake Ferry Holiday Park begins long before the caravans and campsites. It started with a tragedy a drowning in 1850. This tragic event spurred the creation of a ferry service. A ferryman was needed. He needed an income. So in 1851 he cleverly established the Lake Ferry Hotel. This wasn’t just any hotel it was a lifeline for travelers. It also became a symbol of resilience. The hotel stands as a testament to the community’s spirit. It survived time and storms. It continues to be a popular spot for visitors.

Lake Onoke’s outlet to the ocean presents a unique challenge. It’s famously dangerous for fishing. Several drownings have occurred there. The ocean often closes the outlet. This causes the lake to rise. Controlling the lake’s level has always been crucial. Locals have historically dug channels through the beach to relieve pressure. This ensures that properties around the lake are safe. This age-old battle against nature is a part of what makes Lake Ferry so captivating.

In 1997 the community faced a new challenge. Septic tanks caused contamination. The local residents wanted a proper sewerage system. This project took years to materialize. It required cooperation and funding. Eventually in 2003 central government contributed $200000. The system was complete. But even the new system wasn’t immune to issues. In 2020 forestry operations damaged the wastewater system. This required immediate repairs costing $327000.

More recently in 2023 the South Wairarapa District Council took over management of Lake Ferry Holiday Park. The council purchased the campground. They had previously declined to renew a lease due to compliance issues. They invested $209000 for upgrades. Kiwicamp is now the operator. Lake Ferry Holiday Park is being upgraded. It’s being made even better for visitors.

Today Lake Ferry Holiday Park offers more than just a place to stay. It offers a unique experience. It lets you step back in time. It lets you connect with nature and history. It’s a place where you can fish or simply enjoy stunning sunsets. It is more than just a holiday park it’s a place with a story waiting to be discovered.
