Underneath the Florida sun stands Lake Carroll Baptist Church. Its story begins not in grandeur but in humble beginnings. In 1949 Reverend Heard T Burnette had a vision. He envisioned a church in the Lake Carroll area. Fifteen people gathered under a tent. They sat on orange crates for the first worship service.
Lake Carroll Baptist Church grew from those modest roots. Subsequent services were held in a school lunchroom. The congregation later received a donated wooden building. They purchased land next to the school. This was thanks to help from Spencer Memorial Baptist Church. On July 15 1951 the mission officially became a church. Reverend Kenneth L Tucker led the ceremony. Twenty-nine people became charter members. Mrs Doris Pennington was one. She remained active in the church for years.
The church’s first sanctuary opened March 1 1953. It stands today as the administrative building. A fellowship hall and youth building were added in 1968. An educational building and music suite followed in 1981. Lake Carroll Baptist Church expanded to meet the community’s needs. Its growth mirrored the burgeoning Lake Carroll area.
The sanctuary itself has a remarkable history. It was dedicated April 9 1961. It underwent two major renovations. The latest was completed in 1999. The church demonstrates its commitment to its community. It purchased two homes. One is on Pine Lake Drive. The other is on Rome Avenue. These were used for community outreach initiatives.
