Nestled in the heart of Kwun Tong, we find the Lai Yip Street Sitting-out Area. This isn’t just any resting spot. It’s a place where the rhythm of the city slows. It allows you to take a breath and soak in the vibrant energy of Hong Kong. Lai Yip Street itself is a short but vital artery in Kwun Tong’s bustling commercial district. It connects Kwun Tong Road and Ngau Tau Kok Road, near the Ngau Tau Kok MTR Station. The Lai Yip Street Sitting-out Area offers a welcome respite from the urban hustle.

Lai Yip Street has a fascinating history. Officially named on February 22, 1957, it wasn’t open to vehicular traffic until the mid-1960s. Originally, Lai Yip Street and Wai Yip Street had roundabouts at their intersections with Kwun Tong Road and Wai Yip Street respectively. These were removed in the late 1970s and replaced with crossroads. This change meant that traffic on Lai Yip and Wai Yip Streets could no longer turn right. Vehicles wanting to turn right must now go via Hoi Yuen Road. Despite its short length, Lai Yip Street plays a crucial role. It’s one of the few roads providing direct access between Kwun Tong Road, Ngau Tau Kok Road, and the Kwun Tong commercial area. This makes it a busy thoroughfare.

The Lai Yip Street Sitting-out Area provides a peaceful contrast to this activity. It’s a place where you can pause. You can reflect on the vibrant energy flowing around you. As you sit here, imagine the transformation of this area. From roundabouts to crossroads, from a quiet street to a busy connector, Lai Yip Street and its sitting-out area have witnessed the dynamic evolution of Kwun Tong. The Lai Yip Street Sitting-out Area is more than just a place to rest your feet. It’s a testament to the ever-changing landscape of Hong Kong. It provides a quiet place to contemplate the city’s vibrant past and present.
