Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre wasn’t simply erected. Site preparation started years earlier in 1974. The HK$32 million project was a significant investment in addressing Hong Kong’s correctional needs.
Its purpose? To house a diverse group. Remanded prisoners await trial. Others serve sentences. Detainees under immigration laws reside here. Even civil debtors find themselves within these walls. The sheer scale is impressive. It holds 1484 male adults. Think about that for a moment. Over a thousand lives intersecting within these walls.
But Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre isn’t static. It evolved. It originally held 960. Yet by 1997 it was already overcrowded with 1293 inmates. The adjacent Lai Chi Kok Correctional Institution opened in 2006. It housed women. But it closed in 2010. The inmates were relocated. The building was integrated into Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre in 2011. This increased its capacity to its current 1484.
