See this lovely fountain? This is the Labetrunkbrunnen. It’s more than just a pretty water feature. The Labetrunkbrunnen in Vienna’s Stadtpark tells a story of creation and destruction and rebirth.

The original Labetrunkbrunnen was unveiled on May 22 1909. It was a beautiful sculpture by Carl Lahner. It depicted a mother offering her child a drink. This heartwarming scene was a beloved part of the park. Sadly World War II brought devastation. The Labetrunkbrunnen was destroyed in 1945.

But the story doesn’t end there. The people of Vienna loved their Labetrunkbrunnen. They wanted it back. So a new Labetrunkbrunnen was created. Florian Josephu-Drouot the talented sculptor was entrusted with this task. He recreated Lahner’s masterpiece. The new fountain was erected in 1950. It stands today a testament to Vienna’s resilience and its love for art.

Notice the details. The mother’s gentle expression. The child’s trusting gaze. These are not mere decorations. They reflect the enduring bond between parent and child. A bond that transcends even war and destruction.

The Labetrunkbrunnen sits on a square base. Two small basins flank the main sculpture. These catch the water that flows from the waterspouts. It’s a practical detail yet also aesthetically pleasing. It shows the thoughtful design that went into this work of art.

The Labetrunkbrunnen is more than just a fountain. It is a symbol. It is a symbol of hope. It is a symbol of the enduring spirit of Vienna. It is a reminder that even after destruction beauty can be reborn. Even after tragedy beauty can endure. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Take a moment to appreciate its story. Remember the Labetrunkbrunnen. Remember its enduring message.
