Established in 1929 La Plata High School didn’t actually open its doors until 1979. That’s quite a gap isn’t it? The name itself holds a fascinating history. It’s rooted in the Chapman family a prominent family in the area. John Grant Chapman a US Representative built a plantation just north of where Walter J Mitchell Elementary School stands today. He called it La Plata.
Now there are two stories about this name. Some say it’s a reference to the Rio de la Plata in South America. A family member apparently visited and loved the area. Others believe La Plata means “the plateau” in French describing the flat land around La Plata Maryland. Robert Fergusson Chapman John’s son donated some family land for the town’s development. Other landowners also contributed. It’s a little unclear why the town was named solely after the Chapman estate.
The original La Plata High School opened in 1929. It wasn’t just a high school though. It housed students from first through eleventh grade. Can you imagine? The school later moved to the building that now houses Milton M Somers Middle School. Finally in 1979 it settled into its current location on Radio Station Road. The school’s mission focuses on academic excellence and mutual respect. They emphasize critical thinking independent action and responsibility. La Plata High School’s colors are Navy Blue Light Blue and White. Their mascot is the Warrior a fitting symbol for those who strive for success. Over the years La Plata High School has produced notable alumni. These include athletes politicians and even musicians. Their legacy extends far beyond its walls. The school’s history is one of adaptation growth and community. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of La Plata.
