Did you ever hear of a church built with the spirit of evangelical poverty? Right here in Turin, nestled within the vibrant Mirafiori Nord district, stands La Pentecoste. La Pentecoste shares a unique history with its neighboring church, Ascensione. Both were born in the early 1970s during a period of significant urban and industrial expansion. Mirafiori Nord was then a new suburb, swelling with immigrants seeking work in Turin’s booming factories. As the community grew, so did the need for spiritual guidance, leading to the construction of both churches amidst the burgeoning apartment blocks. La Pentecoste, situated in a densely populated area with limited green spaces, was built with simplicity and frugality. Its design, like many others of that era, reflected the community’s focus on practicality and resourcefulness. Initially, social services were scarce in this new suburb. But the community around Ascensione, with its larger territory and green spaces, fought hard to establish the necessary amenities. They even built their church, in the early 1980s, through self-management. This hands-on approach fostered a strong sense of community, bound by shared labor, the Word of God, and the Eucharist. Despite their different beginnings, La Pentecoste and Ascensione have become increasingly intertwined. Starting in the 1990s, they began to share pastoral activities. By 2013, under a single parish priest, this shared ministry deepened. They united everything from youth groups and adult gatherings to services for the elderly. Shared Bible readings in homes and joint biblical catechesis for children further solidified their bond. Even their Caritas aid centers operate in harmony, coordinating efforts with local social services. The two parish councils now meet together, symbolizing their unified purpose. Today, La Pentecoste and Ascensione continue their journey to become “communities of communities.” They strive to be missionaries both within their walls and out in the world. They offer services, share the Christian faith, and provide support to those in need, extending their reach throughout the neighborhood, workplaces, families, and even the political sphere. La Pentecoste, despite its humble origins, stands as a testament to the power of community, shared faith, and a commitment to service.
