A curious contraption it is. This is La Nacelle a sculpture unlike any other.

La Nacelle stands tall yet its height is not constant. It’s a work of art by Denis Pondruel created in 1995. The sculpture is made of steel and an electric motor. It’s situated in Bischheim near Strasbourg.

The remarkable feature of La Nacelle is its connection to the water table below. The sculpture’s height varies. It can rise and fall by almost three meters. This is because of the fluctuating groundwater level. The artist intended a dialogue between the visible and the invisible. The massive structure seems to offer a breathtaking view. However the true foundation lies beneath the ground. It is the unseen groundwater that truly anchors La Nacelle.

Pondruel himself explained his vision. He wasn’t interested in merely showcasing the water table. Instead he was fascinated by its dynamic nature. Connecting the sculpture to this mobile element makes La Nacelle independent of the fixed urban landscape. This connection to the ever-changing underground makes it unique to the region.

The sculpture’s metal structure is obvious. Its hidden mechanical heart however remains unseen. It’s a playful interaction between what we see and what lies beneath our feet. This clever design makes La Nacelle a truly special piece of public art. A chair sits at the top. It’s a visual element only. It serves no practical purpose. The artist calls it a “sign of excess”.

La Nacelle is more than just a sculpture. It’s a reflection of the region’s hidden depths. It’s a dynamic artistic statement. It cleverly plays with our perceptions of what’s visible and what’s hidden. It offers a captivating interaction between art and the natural world. And that’s what makes La Nacelle so memorable. It’s a unique conversation between the earth and the sky. A conversation you can witness right here.
