A whisper of history brushes against your skin. You stand before La Certosa a serene island in the Venetian Lagoon. For centuries this place pulsed with life. Augustinian friars first settled here in 1199. Their presence marked the beginning of a long and complex history. Two centuries later Carthusians replaced them. They rebuilt and expanded the existing structures between 1490 and 1505. Imagine the echoes of their chants filling the air.

La Certosa’s story isn’t just about religious communities. After the Napoleonic conquest it became a military installation. The Castello delle Polveri the Powder Castle stands as a testament to this era. Restored in the late 1990s it is a solitary sentinel from a bygone age. Think of the soldiers who patrolled its grounds the gunpowder stored within its walls.

The island fell into disrepair after the military withdrew. Overgrown and abandoned it became a haven for rabbits and pheasants. Yet its story is far from over. La Certosa underwent a remarkable transformation. Starting in the early 2000s a massive redevelopment project breathed new life into it. Now a public park it offers green spaces walking trails and a marina. You see the results of this transformation. La Certosa is a revitalized island.

In 2022 the island hosted an event of international significance. The first Biennale National Pavilion of the Republic of Namibia made its home here. The exhibition was expansive. It covered 20 hectares of the island. It included desert pictures and an interactive installation. The sheer scale of the event was unprecedented.

Today La Certosa is accessible by waterbus. The Actv lines 41 and 42 connect it to the city. Alilaguna’s Blue Line also stops here. You can easily reach it. La Certosa is a tranquil place for reflection and enjoyment. It combines a rich history with modern amenities. It offers a unique experience for visitors. La Certosa is a Venetian treasure waiting to be explored.
