Picture this a tranquil lake nestled within a bustling city. This is Kyrksjön the heart of Kyrksjölöten nature reserve. It’s a small lake but holds a significant place in Stockholm’s history and ecology.

Kyrksjön meaning Church Lake is aptly named for its proximity to the old Bromma Church. Established in 1997 this nature reserve protects not just the lake itself but also the surrounding rich deciduous forest. This forest is home to an incredible array of species. You’ll find various bird species including the elusive Thrush Nightingale the cheerful Blackcap and the melodious Reed Warbler. These birds skillfully avoid predators like Sparrowhawks Eurasian Goshawks and Tawny Owls.

The lake itself is a haven for waterfowl. Keep an eye out for Eurasian Coots graceful Great Crested Grebes and perhaps even a rare Slavonian Grebe. The lake is shallow its average depth is only 1.5 meters though it reaches a maximum depth of 2.5 meters. This small size and shallow depth means the lake is particularly sensitive to its environment. The lake’s water volume is approximately 76500 cubic meters. Water flows into the lake from local stormwater runoff. However the lack of a significant outflow has created a unique stagnant ecosystem. This stillness belies a rich history. Kyrksjön was once much larger extending far into the Spånga parish. In 1863 it was significantly lowered to its current level changing its character drastically.

Kyrksjölöten is more than just a pretty face. Its importance extends to the wider ecological picture. The reserve showcases the De Geer moraines glacial formations left behind during the ice age. These moraines are of national interest for their geological significance. These long narrow ridges are a testament to the power of nature and the passage of time.

The reserve also has recreational value for the city’s inhabitants. People often jog walk or even ice skate on the lake in winter. The vegetation is stunning. You’ll find different plants thriving along the shores including Carex pseudocyperus purple loosestrife and even milk parsley.

So breathe in the fresh air feel the gentle breeze and listen to the birdsong. Kyrksjön is a small jewel in the crown of Stockholm a place of natural beauty history and surprising biodiversity. You’ve discovered a hidden sanctuary a place where nature and city life coexist in remarkable harmony. Remember this small lake has a big story to tell a story that has unfolded over millennia.
