Established in 1955 the Kwun Tong Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance stands as a testament to faith and community. Its story begins long before its current location at 134 Old Tai Wo Road Kwun Tong. The church’s roots trace back to a time of spiritual awakening and missionary zeal.

The Christian and Missionary Alliance itself was founded in 1887 by Albert Simpson and John Salmon. These men shared a burning passion to spread the Gospel. Their efforts along with others led to the creation of a new missions society. Dr William Cassidy a Toronto doctor became its first ordained missionary. Sadly he died of smallpox en route to China. His sacrifice however ignited a missionary flame that continues to burn today.

The Kwun Tong Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Hong Kong was one of the earliest Alliance churches established in the region. Initially called the Methodist Church of Hong Kong. It operated under the umbrella of the Alliance. It wasn’t directly affiliated with the Hong Kong Christian and Missionary Alliance. It maintained ties with the US Christian and Missionary Alliance a detail not widely known. This connection is legally recognized under the Hong Kong law.

The church’s early days were filled with challenges. The building project took eight years of persistent work. It finally culminated in the church’s completion in 1954. A dedication service followed the next month. Soon after the Kwun Tong Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance established an outreach ministry. It spread across Kwun Tong and New Territories. The church also integrated educational efforts. Kwun Tong Alliance Primary School opened in 1955. A hospital ministry followed. The church actively participated in the growth of Kwun Tong Hospital.

Today the Kwun Tong Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance boasts 23 chapels and 16 schools. Its congregation numbers over 5000. It stands not only as a place of worship but as a center of community service and education.
