Kwai Lun Shek Teng. A name that whispers of ancient legends. It translates to “Toad Stone Peak”. We’re standing at the foot of a remarkable natural wonder. A 150-meter hexagonal basalt column, perched atop a mountain near High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung. Kwai Lun Shek Teng isn’t just a geological marvel. It’s also a breathtaking viewpoint. Imagine standing on the back of this giant stone toad. Gazing out at the stunning vista of the reservoir and the surrounding hills. The journey to Kwai Lun Shek Teng begins at Sai Wan Pavilion. The first part of the hike is a relaxing stroll along a paved path to Sai Wan Beach. You’ll catch glimpses of the reservoir and Kwai Lun Shek Teng in the distance. Teasing you with the promise of what’s to come. After about 30 minutes, the path turns upwards. A long flight of steps leads you to a pavilion and a four-way intersection. Turn right, and continue climbing until you see a sign for the MacLehose Trail. Look closely for a small, almost hidden path on your right. This is the entrance to the final, more challenging ascent to Kwai Lun Shek Teng. The last leg of the hike takes you through dense vegetation. The path is narrow and unpaved, so be prepared for some bushwhacking. The ribbons left by previous hikers will help you stay on course. And thankfully, Kwai Lun Shek Teng itself is visible for much of the way. A reassuring presence guiding you towards your goal. Once you reach the summit, you’ll need to scramble to reach the peak of the rock column. Smaller rock formations act as stepping stones, making the climb easier. And when you finally stand at the top of Kwai Lun Shek Teng, the reward is truly magnificent. A panoramic view of eastern Sai Kung unfolds before you. The turquoise waters of High Island Reservoir shimmer below. And the surrounding hills roll away in every direction. This view is what makes the challenging hike to Kwai Lun Shek Teng so worthwhile. A memory you’ll carry long after you’ve descended back to Sai Wan Pavilion.
