Built on reclaimed land Kwai Fong Estate stands tall. It’s a testament to Hong Kong’s determination. This public housing estate in Kwai Chung has a fascinating history. It’s more than just apartments. It’s a community a story etched in concrete and time.

Originally eleven buildings stood here. They were finished between 1971 and 1973. Sadly structural defects appeared in 1982. The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) discovered problems. The concrete in blocks 8 9 10 and 11 was substandard. Demolition followed between 1985 and 1989. Other older buildings were also torn down in the 1990s.

The redevelopment was extensive. Twelve new buildings rose between 1987 and 2002. Each building has its own name. Kwai Yan House Kwai Chi House Kwai Tak House and more. They represent the revitalization of Kwai Fong Estate. The estate now boasts 6400 units and a bustling shopping arcade.

In 2016 the estate housed 18023 people. The median age was 46.8. Most residents (94.2%) are of Chinese ethnicity. The average household size is 2.9. The median monthly household income was HK$22540. Kwai Fong Estate is a microcosm of Hong Kong itself. A blend of past and present. A community built on resilience and hope.

The estate is in the Kwai Fong constituency. Leung Yiu-chung was its representative until February 2021. He was elected in 2019. Kwai Fong Estate’s story continues to unfold.
