Here at Welanders Väg 12 stands Kvinnohuset a building with a story. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies a vision of solidarity and empowerment.

Kvinnohuset also known as Kvinnohemmet rises fourteen stories high. Carl Melin designed it. Completed in 1947 it quickly became a landmark in Kungsholmen’s cityscape. Its yellow brick facade stands out. It creates a monumental presence on the rocky outcrop where it sits.

Imagine Stockholm in the 1940s. Anna Johansson-Visborg conceived Kvinnohuset as a collective living space for women. In 1942 she formed an economic association. Members bought shares to fund the project. Each share cost one hundred kronor. The building contained 106 apartments.

Anna Johansson-Visborg’s foundation still owns Kvinnohuset. It is a testament to her enduring legacy. The building serves as the western end of Fleminggatan.

Ulla Isaksson’s novel also connects to Kvinnohuset. She wrote “Kvinnohuset” in 1952. Interestingly Isaksson chose not to visit the building. She did not want it to influence her writing. Despite this the building featured as a backdrop in the 1953 film adaptation.

Now fast forward to 1979. The Kvinnohusgruppen established a new Kvinnohuset. This one was a meeting place for all women. Various women’s groups could coordinate resources. They could arrange debates lectures and themed meetings. This Kvinnohuset aimed to be a hub for feminist activity.

For a small annual fee women could become members. Membership granted access to the Kvinnohusbladet. It also gave discounts on events. The Kvinnohuset faced financial challenges. It relied on membership fees and donations to survive. Despite difficulties it persisted as a vital space.

Several groups found a home in the Kvinnohuset. These included the Pub&Café-Gruppen Kvinnofronten and Tealogerna. The Kvinnokören Nätverket Symaskinen and the Kvinnohusbladet editorial team also gathered here. HBTQ Samordningsgruppen Regnbågsnävarna Kollektivhusgruppen Tulipanaros and Soppgruppen were present too. Lesbiska Filmgruppen and LF Lesbiska Feminister further enriched the community.

The Kvinnohuset also hosted smaller support groups. These groups offered women a safe space to connect and share experiences. New groups could form by presenting their ideas at member meetings.

Kvinnohuset at Blekingegatan 67B became a crucial resource. It offered support through Kvinnojourer. Kriscentrum provided round-the-clock assistance. Alla Kvinnorshus offered evening support. Invandrarkvinnor provided help for immigrant women.

The Kvinnohuset stands as a symbol. It represents women’s collective strength and resilience. It is a space where women can connect organize and find support. As you stand before Kvinnohuset remember its history. Appreciate its ongoing mission to empower women.
