Kürnachs name first appeared in writing in 779. It described the “Quirnaha,” or mill stream. This happened during the creation of the Würzburg boundary description. By 822, the village was formally recognized. Emperor Ludwig the Pious confirmed a property exchange involving Kürnach.
For centuries, Kürnachs identity was shaped by its mills and agriculture. The fertile soil supported farming. Even winemaking thrived until the 19th century. Trade routes through Kürnach also boosted its growth. More recently, its proximity to Würzburg has made it a popular residential area. Kürnach expanded with new construction projects.
Kürnachs administration saw changes over time. In 1978, it joined the Estenfeld administrative community. Later reforms allowed Kürnach to regain its independence. It withdrew from the joint administration.

The church belonged to Kürnach Abbey. This Cistercian convent existed briefly. It was founded before 1279 and dissolved around 1300.
