Built in 1873 for Maria Zanders, widow of paper manufacturer Carl Richard Zanders, the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders stands as a testament to Bergisch Gladbach’s rich history. The Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, originally designed by Cologne architect Hermann Otto Pflaume, was more than just a home. It was the heart of Bergisch Gladbach’s social scene. Maria Zanders’ salon was renowned, its reputation extending far beyond the city limits. The Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders witnessed decades of vibrant gatherings and intellectual exchange. In 1932, the villa was bequeathed to the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. It later became property of the city of Bergisch Gladbach. For a time, it served as administrative offices. However, the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders’ journey took a turn towards art in 1986. It became home to the Städtische Galerie, showcasing art from the 19th century to the present. The building underwent extensive restorations, regaining its original grandeur. The three floors of the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders now display a diverse collection. In 2014, the Städtische Galerie transformed into the Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders. A nod to Bergisch Gladbach’s papermaking heritage, the museum’s collection emphasizes “Art from Paper.” Many temporary exhibitions also explore this unique theme. The Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders isn’t just about exhibits. It offers a rich program of educational activities and guided tours. Visitors can delve deeper into the world of paper art and the villa’s fascinating history.
