The imposing structure before you is the Kunsthochschule für Medien – Hauptgebäude in Cologne. Its history is one of evolution adaptation and remarkable success.
Founded in 1990 with only 25 students the Kunsthochschule für Medien initially offered a postgraduate diploma in Audiovisual Media. The school was initially met with mixed reactions. Some viewed it as a necessary step in a changing media landscape others mourned the closure of the Cologne Werkschulen and the perceived loss of traditional art education. Minister for Science and Research Anke Brunn described the founding rationale perfectly. She stated that classic arts had lost their monopoly. New artistic tools like video film and computers were now part of the artistic landscape.
The Kunsthochschule für Medien’s unique approach is project-based. There are no traditional masterclasses instead professors work across disciplines mentoring students individually. This fosters cross-over talent between art media film and science. It is a truly unique approach within German art and film schools.
Over the years the Kunsthochschule für Medien expanded. It added an undergraduate diploma program in Audiovisual Media. It also developed a doctoral program. The school’s programs have evolved. The diploma programs are now called Mediale Künste. New specializations were added including Camera/Image Design and Literary Writing.
The Kunsthochschule für Medien has achieved international acclaim. Three of its student films have won Student Oscars. Numerous graduates have been invited to the Venice Biennale. Several have even been inducted into the Young College of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. One graduate Nieves de la Fuente Gutiérrez even received the prestigious Villa Aurora Fellowship in 2022.
The Kunsthochschule für Medien started in provisional quarters. It gradually expanded its premises. By 2008 it occupied six buildings around Filzengraben. However in 2024 it moved to its current location at Heumarkt 14. This signifies consolidation and a new chapter for the institution.
