What can a single name etched on a plaque tell us? This is the Krystyna Niżyńska Zakurzona Plaque. It commemorates a young girl whose courage echoed through the streets of Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising.

Krystyna Niżyńska Zakurzona was born on June 9 1928 in Lviv. Her life was tragically cut short around September 24 1944 in Warsaw. She was just sixteen years old.

Krystyna also known as Krysia Zakurzona was the youngest paramedic of the Warsaw Uprising. She was a member of the Gray Ranks. During the Nazi occupation Krystyna belonged to the underground 4th Warsaw Girl Scout Troop “Knieje” in Żoliborz. She attended secret classes while working in a tailor shop.

During the first month of the Warsaw Uprising Krystyna served as a liaison. She maintained communication between Śródmieście and Żoliborz. On September 6 she joined the “Sad” platoon of the “Zośka” battalion. She served in the 2nd company “Rudy”. Her role was that of a paramedic.

The nickname “Zakurzona” which means “dusty” in Polish came about in a remarkable way. After a bombing Krystyna was covered in dust and rubble. Yet she insisted others be saved first. She famously exclaimed “Save them. I’m just dusty”. This selflessness in the face of danger defined her spirit.

After the fall of Czerniaków Krystyna was captured by the Germans. She was murdered. The exact date of her death remains unknown. She was last seen alive on September 24 1944 near St. Stanislaus Bishop Church on Wolska Street.

Krystyna’s story is intertwined with her family’s dedication to Poland. Her father Leopold Julian Niżyński was a major in the Polish Army. Her mother Helena Agnieszka from the Donhoffer family supported the Home Army. Her brother Andrzej also fought in the uprising.

The Krystyna Niżyńska Zakurzona Plaque serves as a poignant reminder. It honors a girl who embodied bravery. She sacrificed her youth for her country. It ensures that her legacy of courage and selflessness lives on.
