Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the bustling streets of Cologne? Right here, in the heart of the city, seven meters below the ground, hidden beneath the Theodor-Heuss-Ring, lies the Kronleuchtersaal. A magnificent subterranean space, one of the grandest engineering feats of the 19th century. The Kronleuchtersaal, a testament to a time when Cologne was growing rapidly and needed a solution for its ever-increasing wastewater. Once a bustling hub of activity, the Kronleuchtersaal served as the point where the city’s sewer system came together.

Built in 1890, the Kronleuchtersaal got its name from the two grand chandeliers, each with six candles, that were hung there for its grand inauguration. The Emperor Wilhelm II was a guest at this grand unveiling, and the chandeliers were a gift of honour. In the 1980’s the chandeliers were replaced by an electric one, faithfully replicated from the originals.

Today, the Kronleuchtersaal is a fascinating time capsule of the past and a testament to Cologne’s historical development. The brickwork is stunning, with a high vaulted ceiling and a diameter of 3.80 meters. It’s a space that captures the imagination and speaks volumes about the ingenuity of the engineers who constructed it. This incredible space, a vital part of the city’s sewage system, stands as a reminder of the city’s growth and advancement, a symbol of the engineering marvels that made Cologne what it is today.
