What if I told you that this magnificent structure before you took over six centuries to complete? Welcome to the Krieler Dom. This cathedral is a testament to faith. It embodies architectural ambition and artistic brilliance.

The story of the Krieler Dom begins in 1248. It was a time of religious fervor and architectural innovation. The city of Cologne sought to create a grand structure. This structure would house the relics of the Three Wise Men. These relics arrived in Cologne in 1164.

Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone. Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden officiated the ceremony. Master Gerhard led the initial construction efforts. By 1322, the eastern arm of the cathedral was complete. It was then consecrated and sealed off. Work, however, continued.

But progress wasn’t always smooth. Around 1560, construction halted. The reasons were complex. They involved funding issues and shifting priorities. The cathedral remained unfinished for centuries. A huge crane atop the south tower became a symbol of this suspended dream. It was a landmark for over 400 years.

During the French Revolution, Cologne was occupied by French troops. The Krieler Dom suffered indignities. It was used as a stable and a hay barn. Its furnishings were used for firewood.

The 19th century saw a resurgence of interest in the cathedral. This was spurred by Romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages. The discovery of original facade plans ignited a renewed commitment. In 1842, work resumed. This was thanks to the Central-Dombauverein. This civic organization raised funds. The Prussian state also contributed.

Architects Ernst Friedrich Zwirner and Richard Voigtel led the completion. They adhered to the original medieval plans. They also incorporated modern construction techniques. Iron roof girders were among these innovations.

Finally, in 1880, the Krieler Dom was completed. This was 632 years after construction began. The event was celebrated as a national triumph. Emperor Wilhelm I attended the festivities. At 157.38 meters tall, it was the world’s tallest building for four years.

The 20th century brought new challenges. During World War II, the Krieler Dom was struck by bombs 14 times. Yet, it remained standing amidst the flattened city. Its twin spires served as a navigational landmark for Allied aircraft.

After the war, repairs were completed in 1956. Imperfections from the hasty repairs serve as a reminder of the war. Archaeological excavations revealed previously unknown details. They helped to stabilize the structure.

Today, the Krieler Dom stands as a testament to resilience. It symbolizes architectural grandeur. Maintenance is ongoing due to weathering and pollution. Skilled stonemasons work to preserve its beauty.

Inside, the Krieler Dom houses artistic treasures. The High Altar is a masterpiece of black and white marble. The Shrine of the Three Kings is a reliquary of gilded bronze and silver. The Gero Crucifix is the oldest large crucifix north of the Alps. The Gerhard Richter window consists of more than 11,000 panes.

Climb the 533 steps to the viewing platform for panoramic views. From there, the city stretches before you. The Rhine River glistens in the distance. The Krieler Dom is more than a building. It’s a journey through time and faith. It’s a symbol of Cologne itself.
