You see it, don’t you? The Kriegsopfer War memorial, its panels set inside the shelter building. It stands here at the entrance to the Commonwealth plots within the Cologne Southern Cemetery. And, it is a silent testament to the sacrifices made in the First World War.

The memorial marks the final resting place of 25 soldiers from the United Kingdom who tragically died in this region during the war and never had a known grave. Each name inscribed on the memorial represents a life forever lost, but not forgotten.

They were brought here from all over Germany, their remains collected from 183 different burial grounds. They died in the midst of the fighting and were later buried together, along with over 1,000 Allied prisoners of war.

The memorial was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. Sir Robert was a famous architect in the early 20th century in Scotland. He was the son of a talented architect, and architecture was in the family. He designed not only residences but also churches, colleges, and public buildings, making a significant mark on the architectural landscape of Scotland.

Many of these soldiers, particularly those who died while prisoners of war, have no known grave. They were captured, their fates unknown, and their final resting places lost to time. These 25 soldiers, along with the countless others who perished in the war, were not simply statistics. They were individuals, husbands, dads, sons, and brothers, whose lives were cut short by the tragedy of the war. As you stand here, take a moment to remember them. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten.
