The Kriegerdenkmal Kadoltsberg stands quietly on the side of the road, a reminder of a different time, a time of loss and sacrifice. This is the story of a monument that was built to remember those who died in the First World War. The small memorial is made of simple stone, but its inscription tells a powerful story. It reads, “Zur Erinnerung an die Liesinger Krieger” – a tribute to the soldiers from Liesing, the district of Vienna where the monument is located, who died in the war. The faces in the photos that once adorned this memorial are long gone, the men who once walked these roads forever lost to the dust of history. Yet, the monument still stands, a testament to their lives and their sacrifices, and a reminder to us of the cost of war.
