How much sorrow can a single statue bear? Here at the Kriegerdenkmal Bensberg, the weight of history feels heavy. The Kriegerdenkmal Bensberg stands as a solemn tribute to the fallen soldiers of Bergisch Gladbach. It commemorates those who perished in the German-Danish War of 1864, the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The monument was originally unveiled on June 25, 1882. It was a different time. Germany was still consolidating its power. The horrors of the 20th century were yet to come.

Look closely at the base. You’ll see the inscription: “To the fallen for glory, to the living for remembrance, to future generations for an example, the Mülheim district, 1882.” The statue itself depicts a soldier charging forward, a rifle in his hand. A winged Victory, a symbol of triumph, stands protectively behind him, a laurel branch in her hand. The soldier’s face is young, almost ageless. It’s a stark reminder of the human cost of war. The sculptor, Friedrich Reusch, signed and dated his creation. You can find his inscription on the plinth: F. Reusch, fec. 1881.

The Kriegerdenkmal Bensberg wasn’t always in this exact spot. It once stood closer to the grand Schloss Bensberg, but in 1935, it was moved to its current location. This was because it obstructed the view of the castle and made access difficult. While the monument has been moved, its message has not. It’s a message that resonates deeply, especially in our modern times. Wars may end, but their memory lingers. The Kriegerdenkmal Bensberg stands as a testament to that enduring truth.
