“Brutal realism” is how one Luxembourgian Dompropst described the Stations of the Cross. Here at Kreuzwegstation IX, we can reflect on this powerful statement. The Kreuzweg, or Stations of the Cross, is more than just a path. It is a deeply felt re-enactment.

This Kreuzweg, leading to the Kreuzkapelle, wasn’t always here. The Marianische Bürgersodalität Trier, a Marian association of citizens, likely established it under Bishop Josef von Hommer between 1824 and 1836. Imagine this path newly built. It served as a public display of Catholic faith. This was a time of tension. Trier had just become part of Prussia. The Catholic population felt at odds with the Protestant rule.

Kreuzwegstation IX is one of fourteen stations. The path begins in Trier-Ost, specifically at Kurfürstenstraße. From there, it winds through a sunken lane, cutting through the vineyards. The destination is the chapel “Zum Kreuzchen” on the Petrisberg. “Kreuzchen” is what the locals call the Stations of the Cross. They also call the chapel and its surroundings by that name.

These stations have been renewed over time. In 1880, the original images were replaced. Then again in 1925, new artwork was installed. The Trier sculptor Nagel created these reliefs. They are made of gray limestone. They are set in altar-like sandstone frames. Each frame has a gable or semi-circular top. The images themselves are simple. They depict figures that nearly burst from the frame.

The Marianische Bürgersodalität replaced the old images with the current ones in 1930. The old images were moved to Tarforst. Today, people still walk this path. They especially do so during Lent. They pray the Stations of the Cross. They follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.

The chapel itself has a history. It was built in 1844 and consecrated in 1847. A wealthy merchant and other benefactors provided the funds. The painter Lasinsky from Trier beautifully decorated it. He added images of Helena and Emperor Constantine. The bishop entrusted the chapel to the Konvikt. They have cared for it ever since.

This path, including Kreuzwegstation IX, is more than just a historical site. It is a living testament. It reflects Trier’s social history. It shows its religious devotion. As you stand here, consider the generations who have walked this path before you. Think about their faith. Reflect on their struggles. Acknowledge the enduring power of belief. The cross in the center connects Trier with Luxembourg.
