Standing tall and proud, the Kreuz in Cologne is a true symbol of resilience. This church, built in 1952, was erected in the place of a previous neo-gothic church that had been sadly destroyed by bombing raids in World War II. The Dominicans, who built the first church in 1902, had a long history in Cologne, even though this area was already a Roman settlement in 50 AD. The Dominicans in Bologna, with their dedication to spreading the Christian message, sent their monks to Cologne to establish a convent in 1221. In the following decades, they expanded the convent by building a hall church and later a gothic choir. There was even an apse window donated by Albertus Magnus, a renowned philosopher and theologian, which is still visible in the Cathedral. The dedication of the Dominican monks and their unwavering faith, after a long break forced by the French Revolution, resulted in a church that became a testament to their resilience and a symbol of Cologne’s enduring spirit. You might not know but this area was named ‘Oppidum Ubiorum’ by the Romans before they founded ‘Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium’ in 50 AD. The Kreuz was a gift to Cologne, a new church that rose up in 1952 to replace the destruction, a testimony to the resilience of the Dominicans and the city of Cologne.
