Why is Kreis 10 called Kreis 10? Our journey through Zurich brings us to the intriguing Kreis 10. It’s a district with a layered past, nestled in the northwestern part of the city. Kreis 10 wasn’t always Kreis 10. It came into being in 1934 during Zurich’s second wave of incorporating surrounding municipalities. The newly absorbed Hu00f6ngg quarter became part of this new district. Interestingly, Wipkingen, already part of Zurich since 1893, was also moved into Kreis 10. Before this shift, Wipkingen belonged to Kreis 6, along with Oberstrass and Unterstrass. This reshuffling created Kreis 9, 10, and 11. It also shrunk Kreis 6 and expanded Kreis 7. Kreis 10 is more than just lines on a map. It’s a blend of two distinct quarters: Wipkingen and Hu00f6ngg. Each holds its own story, contributing to the rich tapestry of Kreis 10’s identity. As of December 2021, over 41,000 people called Kreis 10 home, spread across its 9.09 square kilometers. This unique history makes Kreis 10 a fascinating piece of Zurich’s ever-evolving puzzle.
