“Spåravagnsparken.” It’s a peculiar nickname isn’t it? I invite you to explore Krausparken. This narrow green space connects Axelsberg and Mälhöjden subway stations. It is more than just a park. It is a living reminder of Stockholm’s past.

Krausparken stretches about one kilometer. It offers a peaceful escape parallel to Hägerstensvägen. This route was once part of tram line 16. This tram served Mälhöjden between 1910 and 1960. In many areas of Stockholm these old tram lines have disappeared. They were either removed or became part of the subway system. Here in Mälhöjden the track remains. It forms the gravel path that defines Krausparken.

The city is currently improving Krausparken. This ensures that the park remains a vital community space. The gravel path will be widened. This will make it more accessible for everyone.

Krausparken is designed with five distinct areas. These spots are for activity and relaxation. Interestingly these locations often match the old tram stops. The park’s design incorporates elements reminiscent of train stations. You might notice platform-inspired details and railway yard aesthetics.

These areas include seating areas. There is also a stage, an outdoor gym and a boules court. Benches are placed all along Krausparken.

Let’s talk about the five spots within Krausparken. First there’s the Mälhöjden entrance. Then we have the stage area. Next is the activity area. Don’t forget Edward Swartz Passage. And finally the Axelsberg entrance.

The plants in Krausparken reflect the surrounding area. It blends in with the lush villa gardens nearby. The park’s middle section has a garden-like feel. You will see flowering bushes and perennial plants.

The western part of Krausparken is more open. Here you will find older trees with large canopies. These trees are carefully preserved. New trees are being planted. Some shrubbery is being cleared. This ensures a healthy and diverse plant life in Krausparken.

The improvements to Krausparken are happening in stages. In 2021 an outdoor gym, a stage and a boules court were added. Benches, tables and swings were installed. Trees were planted and undergrowth was cleared. The playground was upgraded in 2022. Nature conservation and repairs to a staircase were carried out in 2023.

Hägersten-Älvsjö district administration oversees Krausparken’s renovation. Bite AB is the contractor. Tyréns AB serves as the landscape architect.

As you stroll through Krausparken imagine the trams. Picture them once rumbling along this very path. The park blends history and recreation. It is a unique place in Stockholm. It offers a space for everyone to enjoy nature. The park also serves as a reminder of the city’s transportation history.
