Kraftwerk Simmering began its journey in 1900 a bold vision under Mayor Karl Lueger. A Gemeinderatsbeschluss fueled its creation a plan to electrify Vienna’s streetcars and homes. Two years later the first blocks hummed to life. The “Bahnwerk” section powered the trams. The “Lichtwerk” illuminated homes.
This wasn’t your grandfather’s power plant. By 1913 it boasted 68 water tube boilers powering steam engines and turbines generating an impressive 76000 kilowatts. Imagine the scale the sheer power. The plant even had its own transformers for voltage control. The fuel source evolved from coal to oil and eventually natural gas.
World War II brought devastation. Bombs rained down but the plant remarkably survived. After just ten days of downtime the lights flickered back on. Full recovery took longer reaching 75% capacity only in 1956. Then came the postwar boom. Block 2 was decommissioned but blocks 3 4 5 and 6 expanded power generation.
A special anecdote involves a unique demolition. The demolition of Block 6’s 200-meter chimney involved a remote-controlled demolition machine a marvel of engineering. Its innovative approach avoided the risk of a traditional explosion in the confined space.
The innovative spirit lives on. In 2006 Kraftwerk Simmering expanded with a state-of-the-art biomass plant the largest in Europe at the time. This plant uses wood waste a sustainable fuel source. It even features a high-pressure high-temperature thermal storage system the first of its kind in Europe a testament to its pioneering approach.
Despite a temporary setback in 2019 due to funding issues the biomass plant resumed operation in 2020. Today Kraftwerk Simmering continues to power Vienna serving 730000 households and 7000 businesses. It’s a marvel of engineering history and commitment to sustainable energy.
