Remember that BTOB concert? It was held at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre KITEC. That was one of the many incredible events this building hosted. KITEC wasn’t just any building. It was a hub a landmark. For almost 30 years it served Hong Kong. It was more than an exhibition centre. KITEC housed a shopping mall E-Max and performance spaces like Star Hall and the now-closed Music Zone.
KITEC opened in 1995 originally called the Hong Kong International Trade & Exhibition Centre HITEC. It quickly became a favorite for both international and local artists. Countless musicians performed there. Think IU Eir Aoi even B.I and P1X3L. The Hong Kong Book Fair and the International Electronics Expo also called KITEC home. It played a key role in Hong Kong’s economy and culture.
But times change. In 2021 Billion Development purchased KITEC for a staggering HK$10 billion. The plans? Redevelopment into three commercial buildings. This meant the end of KITEC. June 30 2024 marked its final day. The closure was sad news for many. The Music Zone closed even earlier in March 2024. It was a smaller venue but played a vital role in launching many careers. It was an all-inclusive affordable space.
Many memories were made within these walls. Trade fairs concerts corporate events. KITEC brought people together. It facilitated economic growth and cultural exchange. It was a stage for international stars and local talents alike. While it’s gone its legacy remains. KITEC’s impact on Hong Kong is undeniable. It will be remembered. The redevelopment project hopes to transform this area into a bustling new hub. Let’s hope it’s as vibrant and memorable as its predecessor.
