Didn’t you know that Kowloon True Light School began as True Light Seminary in Guangzhou in 1872? Harriet Newell Noyes a missionary from the American Presbyterian Church founded it. It was the first school for girls in South China.

Kowloon True Light School is a Protestant girls’ secondary school. It stands in Kowloon Tong Hong Kong. The school’s story is one of relocation resilience and dedication to education.

In 1949 the school moved to Hong Kong because of the Civil War in Guangzhou. It was first located on Waterloo Road. It was then known as Kowloon True Light Secondary School. In 1960 the school moved to its current location on Suffolk Road.

Kowloon True Light School’s motto is “Thou Art the Light of the World”. This comes from Matthew 5:14. The school aims to cultivate all-rounded Christian values. It also promotes Chinese culture for girls and women through education.

Over the years Kowloon True Light School has had several principals. Ms. Ma Yi Ying was principal from 1947 to 1973. Ms. Li Wai Lim followed from 1973 to 1978. Ms. Butt Yee Har then took over from 1978 to 1991. Ms. Chan Yuen Sheung was principal from 1991 to 2010. Ms. Lee Yi Ying is the current principal since 2010.

True Light students wear light blue Cheongsam uniforms. This has been the tradition since the school’s beginning. Since 2011 students can choose between a ponytail or two plaits.

Kowloon True Light School has expanded over the years. In 1990 the basketball court was removed. A new annex was built. In 2006 a six-story building was completed. These additions provided more classrooms.

Kowloon True Light School celebrated its 75th anniversary. It continues to uphold its mission. The school wants to inspire female generations. They should pursue knowledge develop talents uphold biblical values and serve the needy.

The school has various facilities. These include the De Xin Academy a Performing Arts Theatre and a Multimedia Learning Centre. These facilities support diverse learning needs. They create an exceptional environment.

Kowloon True Light School emphasizes biliteracy and trilingualism. The primary section became an EMI school in 2011. In 2017 the kindergarten reopened. English is the medium of instruction for all S1 students since 2022-23.
