Stepping inside the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith campus, you’ll find Kot Mata Mandir. This isn’t your typical temple filled with deities. Kot Mata Mandir is dedicated to Bharat Mata, Mother India. Imagine a massive marble map of undivided India, meticulously carved with mountains, plains, and oceans. This incredible relief map is the centerpiece of the temple, a unique representation of the nation. Inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi himself in 1936, the temple was envisioned as a symbol of unity. Gandhi hoped it would become a platform for all religions and castes, fostering peace and love. The temple’s creation was the brainchild of philanthropist and freedom fighter Shiv Prasad Gupta. He wanted to create a secular space, so instead of traditional idols, the marble map became the focus of devotion. This detail makes Kot Mata Mandir stand out.
