Tucked away in the heart of Prague’s Vysočany district is Kostel Krista Krále. You might easily miss it. The church is discreetly nestled within a residential block. This unusual design was a compromise with the city council. They insisted on an apartment building in front. But don’t let the modest exterior fool you. Kostel Krista Krále is a hidden gem of functionalist architecture. This church style emerged in the 1920s, emphasizing practicality and clean lines. Inside, you’ll find a soaring, single-nave space illuminated by natural light. The church was designed by Bedřich Vrzal and built by the firm Nekvasil. It was consecrated on September 7, 1930. The dedication to Christ the King is significant. The Feast of Christ the King was a recent addition to the liturgical calendar. Pope Benedict XV instituted it in 1917. This makes Kostel Krista Krále one of the few churches in Czechia with this dedication.
