Gazing upon this modern sanctuary, can you sense the echoes of a much older tale? This, my friends, is Kościół Matki Bożej Zawierzenia, but its story begins elsewhere, with its predecessor, a small, historic church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene in Wawrzyszew. That little church, bursting at the seams with its faithful, couldn’t contain the burgeoning community. The need for a larger space resonated with Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the Primate of the Millennium, during one of his canonical visits. And so, the seeds of Kościół Matki Bożej Zawierzenia were sown. In the spring of 1982, Father Jan Huryn arrived in Chomiczówka with a mission. His task, given by the Warsaw Metropolitan Curia, was to bring a new parish to life. With characteristic energy, Father Huryn started his work. Surveying began quickly, a community effort led by parishioner Tadeusz Martusewicz. The Warsaw Geodetic Company joined in, offering their services after hours. The first mass took place in the open air on September 12, 1982, a testament to the community’s growing anticipation for their own church. On October 2, 1982, the ground was consecrated, and the first cross was erected. A small chapel dedicated to Our Lady, Help of Christians, was built in just three short months, consecrated by Primate Józef Glemp in December 1982. This marked a significant step towards the realization of Kościół Matki Bożej Zawierzenia. By September 1983, Father Huryn officially became the rector. As the chapel thrived, so did the dream of a larger church. In late 1983, the foundations of Kościół Matki Bożej Zawierzenia were laid. By the following year, pillars and the main ceiling were in place. In a remarkable feat of community spirit and hard work, the lower church was completed in October 1984. The cornerstone, bearing signatures from parishioners, clergy, architects, and builders, was laid on May 23, 1985, cementing not just the building, but also the shared dedication. Construction of the rectory and parish house followed swiftly, finishing by late 1985. This rapid progress was fueled by the parishioners’ unwavering support: their prayers, financial contributions, and physical labor. Their collective dream took a monumental step forward on March 1, 1988, when Primate Józef Glemp formally established the Parish of Our Lady, Help of Christians. The new parish, carved from parts of St. Mary Magdalene in Wawrzyszew and St. Josaphat in Powązki, signified the growth and spirit of Chomiczówka. Kościół Matki Bożej Zawierzenia was well on its way to becoming a reality. The church, completed years later in 1995 with a grand pipe organ installed by Włodzimierz Truszczyński’s company, was finally consecrated on June 7, 2003. It stands as a testament to the dedication of Father Huryn and the community he served, a testament beautifully reflected in the modern architecture of the church before you.
