Emerging from the mists of time, Koryuji Temple beckons. It whispers tales of ancient Kyoto. Koryuji is considered Kyoto’s oldest temple. Established in 603, it holds a special place in the heart of Japan. Koryuji Temple was founded by Hata no Kawakatsu. He received a precious gift, a statue of Miroku Bosatsu, from Prince Shotoku. This act marked the beginning of Koryuji’s long and storied history. The temple houses a wooden image of the Bodhisattva Maitreya. This national treasure sits in a contemplative half-lotus position, known as “Hōkan Miroku.” Its serene presence invites quiet reflection. The temple has endured trials. Fires ravaged the complex in 818 and 1150. Yet, each time, Koryuji rose from the ashes, a testament to its enduring spirit. Koryuji is also home to other remarkable treasures. Within the Reihoden, ancient Buddhist images, paintings, and historical documents are carefully preserved. Many of these artifacts are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. Among them is the statue of Miroku Bosatsu, the Buddha of the future. It was the very first object to be designated a National Treasure in Japan, receiving the honor in 1951. While the vibrant Bull Festival, traditionally held in mid-October, is currently suspended, the spirit of Koryuji remains strong. The temple’s serene atmosphere continues to inspire awe and wonder in all who visit. Koryuji stands as a timeless symbol of devotion and resilience. Its ancient wooden beams whisper stories of centuries past. It is a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the tranquility of the present.
