The K\u00f6rschtalviadukt is a road bridge near Ostfildern-Nellingen in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. Its purpose is to improve traffic flow to Esslingen. Esslingen is a district capital connected to the A8 motorway.
Construction of the K\u00f6rschtalviadukt took place between 1991 and 1993. The bridge was built using the incremental launch method. It opened to traffic on September 6, 1995. The K\u00f6rschtalviadukt stretches 724 meters. It rises 55 meters above the valley floor.
As the K\u00f6rschtalviadukt spans the K\u00f6rsch Valley, it crosses other infrastructure. A 110-kilovolt power line belonging to EnBW AG passes below. Also a sewage treatment plant sits in the valley.
The bridge’s construction required substantial resources. Builders used 6,800 cubic meters of concrete. They also used 660 tons of reinforcing steel and 440 tons of prestressing steel.
Initially, cyclists could use the K\u00f6rschtalviadukt. But this changed four years after opening. Increased motor vehicle traffic made cycling unsafe. By 2013, 25,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily in both directions. This posed risks, especially to students from Neuhausen.
In 2018, the authorities created a dedicated cycle path by narrowing the traffic lanes. The lanes are now 3.75 meters wide. The cycle and pedestrian area measures 2.75 meters. A 90-centimeter concrete wall separates it from the road.
In August 2024, the bridge underwent further construction. Workers extended the fall protection on the sides. This required a full closure of the pedestrian and cycle path. The work lasted from August 26 to August 30, 2024. A detour was put in place via Neuhauser Stra\u00dfe.
Following this, work began on the southern side of the bridge to enhance protection against climbing over. This involved closing one lane of the L 1202 in stages. The project aimed to finish by September 6, 2024. Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg invested around 240,000 euros in these improvements.
