Whispers of the past linger here at Korokoro Cemetery Memorial. This isn’t just a resting place. It’s a sacred space. A place where history whispers through the wind.
Korokoro Cemetery Memorial is more than just headstones. It’s a poignant memorial honouring hundreds buried here. Many lie beneath the earth without individual markers. Instead a large memorial lists many names. A single headstone stands out. It remembers three war veterans. Edmund Bunny James Casserly and Joseph O’Connor rest together near the memorial.
The land itself holds a special story. It was a gift. Te Ati Awa chief Honiana Te Puni gifted this land to the Catholic Church. This act cemented a relationship. Sadly that connection faded over time. Fewer people knew this land’s sacred nature. That is until a project revived its history. It revealed the gift and the importance of remembering.
In 2004 a service of healing began a new chapter. Sacred Heart parish and Te Atiawa formed a joint guardianship. This kaitiakitanga is a partnership. They protect the cemetery’s integrity together. This is crucial as State Highway 2 upgrades surround the cemetery. Thankfully contractors and all involved respect this sacred space.
November 2007 saw another significant event. A newly restored monument was blessed. This ceremony honoured those named on the memorial. It also acknowledged those whose names are lost to time. The service ensured their memory is kept alive. The passage of time may obscure some details but it cannot erase the stories within these grounds. The stories of faith sacrifice and community. Korokoro Cemetery Memorial stands as a testament to these stories.
