The Korea Kulturhaus Wien building itself has a fascinating history. It was originally built for the International Garden Show in 1964. Architect Kurt Schlauss designed it. After the garden show, it became a restaurant. Later, it transformed into a dancing local and then a fitness studio. It stood empty for years before its rediscovery.
In 2010, a group dedicated to promoting Korean culture in Vienna found the building. It was threatened with demolition at the time. Architect H-Sang Seung oversaw the redesign. The renovations cost around 1.5 million euros. Funds came from Korean cultural organizations and donations.
The building’s architecture is striking. It is a two-story rectangular structure with pillars. The 24-meter-long facade faces the lake. Large windows offer stunning views. The window elements on the upper floor can be lifted using counterweights. In the lower restaurant, windows slide sideways using joints and guide rails. Interestingly, the lower floor is below the water level. This creates the illusion of a ship at anchor.
The Korea Kulturhaus Wien officially opened on May 3, 2012. The South Korean ambassador, Austrian President Heinz Fischer, and Vienna City Councillor Ulli Sima attended the opening.
Today, the Korea Kulturhaus Wien is a hub of activity. You can enjoy a traditional Korean tea. There is also a library filled with Korean literature. The center offers calligraphy courses. Language courses are available for both Koreans and Austrians.
