Ever wondered where decisions shaping Germany’s military defense were once made? That’s the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne in Cologne. Today we’re standing before a site steeped in history. It’s a place that has evolved mirroring Germany’s journey.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne is a key installation of the Bundeswehr. It is named after Konrad Adenauer. He was the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Adenauer was born in Cologne. The Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne is located south of Cologne’s city center. It lies in the Raderthal district, part of Rodenkirchen. Nearby, you’ll find the Südfriedhof to the west. The Militärringstraße runs south. To the east is the Brühler Straße.
The Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne’s story began in the 1960s. It was built for the Truppenamt. This later became the Heeresamt and then the Amt für Heeresentwicklung. The federal government wanted to move military offices subordinate to the Ministry of Defense to Cologne. The idea arose to also house the MAD headquarters there. MAD is the Amt für Sicherheit der Bundeswehr.
This new building offered the ASBw a chance to set specific construction requirements. These included facilities for card files and laboratories. Shared security and bunker usage created synergy. The ASBw moved into the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne in late 1964.
Until 2023, the Amt für Heeresentwicklung was also located here. It then relocated to the Axa-Campus in Cologne-Holweide. The Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben leased two buildings there. The official handover happened on May 5, 2023. Now, the Bundesamt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst is the sole main occupant of the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne.
What does the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne look like? It has four identical five-story office buildings. A 14-story high-rise provides additional space. There is also a conference center here. A helicopter landing pad supports operations. For recreation, there is a sports hall and a tennis court.
Several units have been stationed at the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne over the years. These include the Amt für Sicherheit der Bundeswehr. It was renamed Amt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst in 1984. Later in 2017, it became the Bundesamt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst. The 6./Feldjägerbataillon 730 was also stationed here. The Truppenamt, renamed Heeresamt in 1970, once called this place home. The Heeresamt merged into the Amt für Heeresentwicklung in 2013. Today, the Konrad-Adenauer-Kaserne houses the Bundesamt für den Militärischen Abschirmdienst. The Sanitätsversorgungszentrum Köln-Raderthal provides medical support. The Unterstützungspersonal Kasernenkommandant Köln 1 offers base support.
